DNS: The Internet's Phone Book
DNS stands for "Domain Name System." It's like a giant phone book for the internet that helps your computer find websites!
What is DNS?
Imagine you want to call your friend, but you only remember their name, not their phone number. So you look in a phone book to find the number!
DNS does the same thing for websites. When you type "www.google.com," your computer doesn't know where Google is. DNS helps find Google's address!
How does DNS work?
Every website has a special number called an IP address. It looks like this: 142.250.185.46
But numbers are hard to remember! DNS lets us use easy names instead:
- You type: www.google.com
- DNS finds: 142.250.185.46
- Your computer connects to Google!
A simple example:
Think of it like this:
- Website name = Your friend's name "Sarah"
- IP address = Phone number "555-1234"
- DNS = The phone book that connects the name to the number
Why is DNS important for security?
Bad guys can trick DNS! This is called a "DNS attack":
- They can send you to fake websites
- They can steal your passwords
- They can show you fake pages that look real
DNS attacks:
Imagine someone changes your phone book so "Pizza Shop" shows the wrong number. You call thinking it's the pizza shop, but it's actually a scammer! That's what DNS attacks do.
Staying safe:
- Use trusted DNS services
- Be careful of fake websites
- Look for the lock 🔒 in your browser
DNS is the internet's address helper!
